In March 2020, the Future of Sex Education (FoSE) Initiative released the second edition of The National Sex Education Standards: Core Content and Skills, K-12 (NSES) to support educators in providing medically accurate, trauma-informed, inclusive sex education. These standards are an invaluable tool for planning and implementing sexual health education. To aid in the implementation of the standards, EyesOpenIowa and Teen Pregnancy and Prevention Partnership are partnering to offer grade-level workshops which will cover all seven topic areas included in the NSES to ensure educators are prepared in essential content and skills for K-12 sex education.
Each grade level workshop series provides 8+ hours of professional development in an online learning environment. Participants will meet multiple professional learning standards for sexual health educators and receive learning activity suggestions for classroom use. The Sex Education Collaborative (SEC) envisions and works to support a world in which all young people’s right to comprehensive, high-quality sex education is recognized and fulfilled. We know that this can only be achieved if educators are equipped with the knowledge and training needed to effectively deliver sex education. The SEC is made up of sex education experts who share the common goal to advance and scale K–12 school-based sex education programs across the United States.
Together, we created the Training Hub to bring together, in one convenient, central place, access to trusted national, regional, and state-based sex education training, technical assistance, and policy support. At www.SexEducationCollaborative.org, you can also find resources created and endorsed by the SEC and an overview of each state’s current sex education laws, policies, and guidelines.
