Purpose

The purpose of my work is to help people dismantle shame and stigma about bodies and relationships. I work part-time with the United Church of Christ as Minister for Sexuality Education and Justice. I also have an independent consulting business called Diligent Joy, through which I serve parents, schools, children, youth, and faith communities with comprehensive sexuality education services. Through my work with the UCC, I shepherd the Our Whole Lives / Sexuality and Our Faith curricula, lifespan, inclusive , developmentally appropriate, comprehensive sexuality education, with a faith overlay companion manual for each age level. I have been involved with sexuality education since 2006. I am also on the faculty of Great Conversations in Seattle, where the model is to teach youth 10-12 years old with a grown-up about physcical and emotional changes during puberty, relationships, consent, and reproduction.

Expertise

My special interest/skill is with progressive faith communities who are looking for a faith/theological connection with comprehensive sexuality education. I also am co-author of Our Whole Lives: Sexualilty Education for Grades 4-6, 2nd. Edition, and The Parent Guide for Our Whole Lives, 2nd Edition. I wrote an opinion column in my local newspaper for 12 years ("Sex in the Suburbs"), and write frequently for other projects.

Curriculum
Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 4-6 (Second Edition)

Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. Developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.

Our Whole Lives Grades 4-6, Second Edition: Designed for use by parents, teachers and pastors with youth in grades 4-6. This 10-session program helps participants learn about and discuss the physical and emotional changes of puberty. The program offers accurate, factual information on human sexuality to preteens who need it to make responsible decisions and stay healthy.

The Parent Guide to Our Whole Lives Grades K-1 and Grades 4-6 (Second Edition)

This guide is designed to help parents (and other loving caretakers) respond to children’s questions and concerns about sexuality. Used for both the K-1 and 4-6 OWL resources.
